Town School Talk Week 7 Term 2 2022

Year 5 celebrates Reconciliation

Year 5 celebrates Reconciliation

In light of Reconciliation Week, 5D and 5A participated in a live stream hosted by members of the Australian War Memorial. Students explored the significance of this time for Aboriginal people through objects, artworks, photographs and records of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who served for Australia. Further discussion was held after we read the poem, ' I Am Sorry'. We created hands to represent our views about why working together towards reconciliation is important when creating a united society and how we are going to achieve this.

Zone Cross Country

Zone Cross Country

Last Friday, our brave 8–13-year-olds who has qualified for the Zone Cross Country, ventured to Gately Ovals to participate in their 2- or 3-kilometre race. It was a bitterly cold and wet start, but despite such the conditions, our staff and accompanying staff, Miss Bollen and Miss Henderson, were resilient and displayed a wonderful sense of sportsmanship to undertake their roles. Congratulations to Ellexiis Gibbs-Dick, George Brown, Chloe Cameron, Backet Gibbs-Dick, Clinton Lamb, Hunter Barrett, Lily McCahon, Lucas Plowman, William Stuart and Lachlan Cameron for successfully progressing to the next level. We wish them well as they compete at the North West Cross Country on Friday 17th June.

Eisteddfod Success

Over the last week, our students competed in a range of Eisteddfod pieces, including the public speaking, Group Speech and Poetry recitals. Under the tutelage of Mrs Whan, Riley Sparrow, Grace Lennox, William Stuart, Phoenix Malcolm, Elsie Barton, Cadence Anderson and Joe Brown chose to write about ‘Making a Difference’ or ‘Caring for our Environment’ delivering moving pleas to the adjudicator and audience to change the way we view real world issues. It was fiercely competitive, and the adjudicator found it challenging, but in the end, Grace was placed 1st, with Riley a close 2nd and William, Phoenix, Elsie, Cadence and Joe all receiving Highly Commended. The adjudicator was particularly impressed with their confident and convincing arguments and the fact they did not need to rely on palm cards. 21 Year 4 students, Led by Miss Bollen, recited two poems, ‘In the Flood’ by James Aitchison and ‘When the Word Turned Upside Down’ by Margaret A Savage. They received a highly commended amongst some strong competitors and were commended for their efforts. 18 Year 6 students, led by Miss Glass, performed ‘Brumby’s Run’ by Banjo Patterson and were praised for their creative take on the classic piece. They also were very animated presenting ‘What to Do with a Dinosaur’ by Ken Nesbitt. They achieved a 3rd place and Miss Glass could not have been prouder of the effort and enthusiasm they put into their performance.

Pre-Kinder’s Explore Nursery Rhymes

Throughout Term 2, our Tuesday group of pre-kinder students have enjoyed learning about word play and rhyming using classic nursery rhymes. They have explored counting concepts and learnt to follow instructions, practised their fine motor skills and are beginning to develop their pencil grip. Each week they delight in fruit time and always looks forward to the rich text Mrs Whan has brought to share with them. This week, they shared in the joys of being 4, through Alison Lester’s picture book, ‘When Frank Was Four’. They met Humpty Dumpty and completed some very tricky rhyming card games. We look forward to helping our pre-kinders improve their oral language and pre-literacy skills through this rich program and encourage our families to keep sharing the nursery rhymes in between sessions. If families are yet to attend, please contact the school on 6792 2246 to request enrolment information and a pack. We look forward to supporting our students and their families as they begin this incredible step on their learning journey.
