Science Challenge

Science Challenge

On Tuesday 8th June, 32 year 6 students competed in the North West Science and Engineering Challenge Discovery Day. The student’s hard work was rewarded with a second place and they found it enriching to challenge their brains.

The Discovery Days aim to challenge Year 6 students to consider a career in Science or Engineering. Students participated in activities which had them creating bridges, chairs, mini-catapults, earthquake-proof towers and bionic hands. Students were also presented with scenarios where they had to avoid power outages in cities, plan efficient transport networks and create and send secret codes.

All students worked well as a team using problem-solving, trial and error and experimentation to solve the problems they were faced with. A highlight of the day was watching the student’s bridges being tested. One NPS bridge was extremely well built surviving the heaviest testing weight, called the ‘bridge buster’, without even a scratch.
